Read it in the same place everytime so the car is on the same level and when the car has been sitting for a while and compare each time

If your between the lines your good if your below the line add a little till its between the lines I don't know how you measure a quart from the stick but there's really no need to just use your judgment

Default re: How To Read Oil Dipstick

If the oil level on the dipstick reads at the bottom of the minimum line, then the oil is 1qt low. In the middle, then its half a quart low. Be sure your reading the dipstick correctly. If the oil level is higher on one side then the other, i normally go by the lower side(back side) due to a slight curve in the dipstick can cause it to pick up oil from the walls of the dipstick hole. When in doubt, add a 1/4 quart at a time.
