Default How Do You Flush Your Coolant?

Pretty simple question, how do you drain the coolant in your radiator ? just take the lower hose off or is there a drain bolt ?

Yes, via the "Drain Plug". It is made of some sort of nylon/plastic material, so be careful not to strip it. You can use a phillips head or a flat-blade screwdriver.

Or you can just follow this procedure below:

Flush Procedure

You'll need to flush the engine until clear water comes out to get it all.

1) Remove lower radiator hose (LRH) and drain radiator and reconnect.

2) Remove block bolts and drain block and keep heat to high with blower set highest.

3) If the block bolts are hard to get, then fill radiator with distilled water, remove upper radiator hose (URH) and plug the upper radiator hole at the radiator end with towel. Connect a water hose the one I got was from Home Depot for $5 and of 4 ft length, it is deep blue in color which fits snuggly onto the URH and clamp it and point the extended hose to a gallon bucket. Start car and keep filling the radiator with distilled water while thermostat opens and sends out the coolant out of the block via the URH to the gallon bucket.

4) Run through 4 Gallons of distilled water, and after sometime its only water that comes off the URH.

5) Stop and reconnect URH and drain the radiator and fill the radiator with full strength Nissan coolant (leaving 1/2L for overflow tank).

6) Block has 3.5-4.0L of distilled water and radiator 3.5L of coolant (total capacity is around 7.5L including heater)

7) Start engine and cycle through for the water and coolant to mix.

8) Fill overflow tank completely with 1/2L coolant and distilled water.

9) Purge remaining air in system by opening radiator cap on an inclined drivethrough and keep running for 45 min.

10) All air is out of the closed loop system. Fill overflow tank to full and check levels for a week.

I remove the drain plug and upper hose. Stick a garden hose in the radiator, via upper hose location and run water until all coolant is out and only clear water comes out. Now you have drained correctly. Start car, put in neutral and refill, burp system to get rid of air bubbles and top it off, done!

Default Re: How Do You Flush Your Coolant?

question about this, I read online I have to lift the car 39" but my Jack cannot go that high. I have very little heat on the car, I am not loosing any antifreeze, I tried to work out the bubbles, the thing is when the thermostat opens it swallows the antifreeze, I wait for the fan to shut off and it does not come back to level so I add a bit of antifreeze and then it overflows, and bubbles come out, what is the very best way to burp it? I ran the car for 30 minutes and still very little heat. I never had this issue with any other car. thanks

You need to replace the Thermostat, that is your problem. Its cheap under 15 dollars. That is one thing hat I should have mentioned earlier, when you drain the coolant, its best idea to drain everything and replace the thermostat. If you do it carefully, you will not lose too much coolant.

Makes burping the cooling system so much easier.

Lisle Corporation

If you can not get the car high enough on a jack, do you know of a steep hill that you could park on. I did it in the driveway beside the house that goes down to the garage.

You need to add coolant at the same time you see the level drop. Letting it drop down too far will just suck in more air.

Not smelling any coolant or losing any, I am picking up the Lisle funnel and it should work. Will keep updating. Thanks
