Default Engine Tuning?

Just a quick question I have. Today I just remembered that when I bought my max the guy told me he had it performance tuned. Granted this was over the phone in a rush, so I'm not sure if he misspoke or not. The only reason I say that is because I know it's a pricey thing to do. Just curious, is there any way to tell for sure if it was tuned? I know he set it back to stock when he sold it to me so I couldn't be sure what all has been done, but I know it was lowered and everything because the fenders are rolled in. Anyone have any idea?

depending on what year your car was,

It was either flash with TS ( technosqaure ) but even if it went back to stock , that means he has a STOCK ECU back in there.

there is nothing on the market that you can just turn it on or off.

even piggy-back standalones, are PnP ( Plug N Play )

its an 04 se 6spd, no consideration went into buying it because of the supposed tuning, it was a great deal and is in awesome shape so I went for it! Just got curious all of the sudden if it actually was tuned or not.

and my assumption wasn't that it was "un-tuned," I just wanted to know if we had a miscommunication or if it really was tuned!

I doubt it was him, because my car is black. But it's been two owner car, I think the guy that owned it first did most of the modding, but I could be wrong. The man I bought it from only had it for a few months, like 8 or so, his name was codey. I know the car has been kept up with maintenance wise quite well because I seafoamed it (at 166,000) and it barely had any smoke..

I wonder if he was just talking about a timing advance. There are only a few units that will "tune" our cars. SAFC2 and NEO "tune" a/f ratios, chances are you would have an A/F gauge in there if they did that, unless they pulled it. Bullydog I think will only do timing.

If your in good with your local, go have them check to see what your ignition timing is set to. If it is -2 then you need to run 93 octane to avoid spark knock. If it's not -2, then have them set it to -2 and then run 93 oct :P Timing advance did wonders for my gas mileage, I gained ~6mpg.

depends on the timeline of the First owner and the 2nd owner.

Bullydog tune has been *new* almost to the Max community in the last 2 years or so.

before that it was TS reflashes.

piggy-backs like SAF/NEO are a bunch of handfuls

and the UTECs owners could be counted on one hand

I think you mean +2 which is 17 degees.

-2 is retarding your timing on a nitrous setup. -2 = less mpg in n/a motor.

Maybe it was all taken out then, I know the car used to be fixed up a little because he had it lowered and I'm pretty sure he had the stock air intake just put in as well. I doubt it's a timing advancement, I'm lucky to get 20 in the city, but that's with 91 octane. Can't say I haven't thought about it though, think it's worth it to go +2 for the extra price in gas?

You're right, I am talking +2. I personally think it is worth it but I guess it's preference. Most people on these forums have it done since it's cheap, if not free, helps your MPG, and seems to add a little pep.

Do you have to use 93 or can you use 91? Any other noticeable changes besides MPG and a little pep?

I hear 93, and will only use 93. Lower octane will cause spark knock. For me it seemed that the gas pedal was more sensitive. Like, as soon as you touch it it will go, no play in the pedal. Not sure what others have noticed. more details in this thread: How to Advance Timing +2 Degrees (For Dealers w/ Consult II & III)
