Exclamation Engine Noise on Startup *VIDEO*

Any one have this or have had this? Anyone can let me know what they think it is or what it could be? Any help would be appreciated.

Edit: This noise does go away mostly when the engine is heated up. It's just a annoying sound and something I'd like to get fixed.

Sound like it could be the timing chain tensioner... But let the pros chime in... Best of luck in getting the problem solved..

I've been researching it since you posted and it seems like it's a 450$ repair, but then I've heard as much as $2200 from Nissan Stealership.

It's weird it was like this a few months ago, then I brought it to my mechanic and he said it was low on oil, and did a oil change and that fixed it for a few months, it just started coming back the last couple weeks now.

Can you upload a video of the sound you're getting?

Could be a couple things, most likely its a timing chain tensioner, but could also be your lifters.

Anyone have ideas as too how much this is going to set me back?

YUP ^ stuck lifter, lifters are cheap to replace HOWEVER the labor involved in replacing one or all is absolutely ridiculous since it requires the timing setup to be removed to remove the cams etc... parts no more than 120$ for lifters as for labor, its gonna be 400 and up.

When you find out what it is let me know, if you could post a video that would be good as well.

Ok lifters can go bad at any given moment, some times they fuck up due to lack of oil at a certain point in time, or sometimes they pump up and just need to be bled it happens randomly and has happened to me before but not in the maxima. and as for Mystery ^ when the engine is cold the lifters will be much louder and if they are no good it will be hella loud, but as the engine gets warm the sound will go away due to the oil getting thinner since it got hotter.

Hope that helped :-]

Digital that goes for you too bro, does your sound go away once warm ?

ANOTHER possibility could be a bad fuel damper and thats like 105$ I have a bad fuel damper in my car, it has no negative effects but NOISE in the cabin of the car not in the engine bay which is weird, but it does not sound like that all.

That sound ^ sounds more like a diesel truck in idle.

Yeah once it warms up it seems to go away, after the last oil change it went a way for a few months, now it's back. Last time I was at my mechanic he said he had to change out a retainer valve that went bad. But I dont think that has anything to do with it...

Then again, I'm no mechanic, just a owner.

Yea bro 9.9/10 times when it ticks like that when the engine is cold and it goes away as the engine warms up it means one or more of the lifters are no good. INCASE YOU DONT KNOW Lifters are there to lift oil up from the oil runners in the cylinder head to lube up the cam lobes and rocker arms along with everything else up there. So the reason why it ticks when the engine is cold is because the oil is cold and since its cold its thicker so its gonna be harder for a bad lifter to pump it up hence the slapping noise it makes, however when the engine is hot the oil is thinner so it flows through with no issues.

Thats a more in depth explanation that was not typed up on my iphone hehe.

BUT AGAIN I could be wrong dude, it could also be the timing tensioner or one of the guides, I never had a n engine with a timing chain so i dont have much personal experience with that.

Some people actually do an oil change as temp solution. Some even use thicker oil which helps reduce that noise.

When I had this problem the first thing I did was get an oil change and the sound wasn't as bad. It eventually came back lol and at that point it was one of my timing chain tensioners.

This is a very very common problem on 6thgens. I've had 4-5 friends have the same issue and it was always the timing chain tensioner.

Timing chain tensioners was my first thought, hopefully i find out monday. They finished the auto body work, but i asked them to look at this since no one was able to figure it out at nissan when i brought it in a year or so ago.

Just be mindful. Some places will just tell you need the whole timing chain set replaced (tensioners, chains guides etc...).

Based on experience and the majority of the 6thgens with this noise... TENSIONERSSS!!!!
