I replaced both of my engine belts a few months ago, due to the fact that I was getting some extremely annoying squealing on initial startup. Typically, if I have the AC set to on, and I start the car, and the AC starts at the same time, the belt (I'm assuming the AC belt) would squeal like crazy. If I turned off the AC, waited a few seconds, and turned it back on, the squealing would stop. I tried tightening the belt, but the squealing continued. If I sprayed belt dressing on the belt, the squeal would stop, but would come back a few days later. I only had 30K miles on the car. I decided to finally replace the belts. It's been a long time since I've had a car without an auto belt tensioner. I replaced both belts with help from cgoss writeup, and it went relatively smoothly. I though I had good tension on both belts, and then a few days later...I'm getting the squeal again. I jacked the car up and tightened the AC belt a little more. Squeal went away. Now that we are in the heart of the hot/humid weather here, the stupid squeal is back. Do I need to tighten the belt even more? It seems pretty tight to me already, I'm afraid of overtightening it...I don't want to ruin any of the bearings....
![]() The belts I used are from AutoZone if it makes any difference. Just recently, when it started squealing again....I start the car and the AC comes on. I let the car idle for a minute or so, and then I put it in drive. As soon as I step on the gas, it squeals like a stuck pig. I turn off the AC, and then turn the AC back on, and it's fine...

No squealing here. I have 70,000 on what I'm assuming are the original belts.
And you're yelling me we don't have a belt tensioner???

Don I'm guess the belts they have at auto zone are junk. I had the same issue, had Nissan replace them and absolutely no noise since.

Ive used GATES belts , we have the main tensioner thats a 14mm
I would NOT overtighten as I have broken the tensioner many times , ( yes MANY TIMES on my5thgen and my6thgen , luckily they both share the same part # ) Theres not much you can do , Ive run into puddles or when it rains, it sqeeks like a piggy as well. one thing I MAY suggest that helps is when the BELTS are off, clean the pulley with brake cleaner, there may be debris in the pulley ( CRANK , ALT , AC COMPRESSOR ) try that first, dont go switching belts yet because of the brand, maybe a shorter belt may also help so that you dont need to add that much tension. I normally use a can of silcone spray , which is the same as belt spray |

Mine does the same crap. Changed the belt out with a gator back belt when i put on the high output alternator last year. I have adjusted the belt tension twice this summer due to squealing when the compressor engages. Both times the belt has been much more loose than it was when i last tightened it. Surely I'm tightening the tension pulley back up enough. I'm hitting the wrench with a rubber mallet to break it free and snug it down. Either the tensioner is moving or my belt is stretching.

This just started with my car as well. It sounds horrible, but only lasts about 10 seconds.

Do the belts say Dayco if so, those are cheap and arent the best. Get Good Year gatorbacks, they are very good and so far I havent heard any complaints about it. I've had dayco belts an after a month having it on it kept squealing, even when I turned my A/C on in the summer it squealed. And when it rained oh my gosh, its like a pig is stuck inside my engine bay.

That's exactly what I'm experiencing. When I tightened them up last time, they didn't seem to have come loose from the first install, but I think I had them a little loose as I was afraid to overtighten them. Now I've got it snug, and I really don't want to tighten it up much more. The squealing has only happened once since I re-tightened them.
Frasher, we DO have a tensioner, but it is not an AUTO/SPRING-LOADED tensioner. You have to set the tension yourself, and then tighten down the pulley.

I've been getting a similar noise when I turn my ac on. I always thought it was squeaky bearings... maybe it is the belts.

Something i never did was crank the car over after tightening up the belt. It may have been tight around the tensioner pulley but not around the other pulleys. Might do that and take a course grit sand paper to the pulleys this weekend. It is rather embarrassing when you start the car and the belt starts squealing when the ac compressor kicks in. I have actually gotten into the habit of turning off the ac when i turn the car off. It never squeals while driving down the road.

A little off-topic but i heard that you should never turn the car off while the AC is on. you should always turn the car off or on while the AC is off. i dont know if that is true or not but i've followed that rule and im at 67k miles with stock belts.

I heard that many years ago from my father too. Of course he also said you get better fuel mileage with the AC off and windows down on the highway. I wouldn't take either to the bank anymore. Old timer's. If the AC did not have a clutch on it then it would be one less accessory it had to turn while starting the car. If you have a routine that works for you than continue doing it.

Hawaii as I understand your complaint:
"Engine Belts Squealing When Weather Is Wet/Damp?" Do as I do. Don't drive in the rain. ![]() Sorry, I could not resist. |

Guys , try this the next time the belt is off,
Brake cleaner with the straw and spray on the Crank/ALT/A/C compressor pulley. we get so much sand and debris that the grooves get dirty, it builds up , esp if you spray silicone or belt spray. Try cleanning it out, its fast and easy , then tighten the tensioner and see if the sqeeuk as gone. Then report back !

I've heard that too, just in general automotive care. I'm guessing it puts extra stress on the starter to engage more components, mechanical or electrical. I would assume that designers & engineers thinking this, but who knows.
It's habit for me too though, I always shut off as much electrical as I can before turning the car off. |
