Default Buying A Used Motor

I'm in a jam and my motor is about to blow. I am looking for a replacement motor and found one on ebay which is about 1 hours drive from my location now. The question is that its at a steal of $550.00 with 87,000 but has a cracked timing cover in which I will have to use mine. The car was involved in a front end accident. Is this a good deal or should I stay away from it?

Honestly I just need the motor for less than 10,000 miles before i do a full rebuild. I am just looking to get a working motor for my cross counrty move to California before i purchase another motor for a full race build.

Whats the likely hood of it having major internal damage?

It is a steal. As far as answering your question about the possibility of engine being hurt by accident all depends on the word "cracked".....is there chunks of the cover that went into the timing valley (assuming engine mount cause the damage there)and got ground up and caused damage to timing components etc. or perhaps a small crack with timing cover intact. The impact itself does not cause engine damage "most" of the time....but personaly for less headache I would avoid purchasing an engine that has been hit directly like that..... Just my 2 cents.

One hour drive is definitely worth the drive to check it out in person....

It is definitely worth a look. You could really just luck out. No chance of them getting it to start I assume as it is probably already pulled. Maybe have them pull the oil pan when you check it out to look for metal particles.

Do you really want to put in a motor you're not sure about and then drive 2500 miles with it??

Dang sorry to hear that, wish I could offer you some good advice about what to look for.
No way the existing motor will make it?

well because you do not know the extent of the damage , seeing the crank pulley destroy like that , we dont know if the car was still running after the hit , and worse case scenario , crank walk... for $550 your not 100% if internals are ok ,

you would waste a good day installing a motor and be pissed if there was issues.

Im just stating worse case scenario , it may not even be damage but do you want to take that chances ??

Your right. Im just in a rush to get going to Cali. I did see a few others on carparts.com. Good thing I keep a full tool set in my trunk at all times. Now i need to buy a lift that i will have to leave down here.

When i say full tool set i mean impact gun and other goodies along with a low profile speed jack lol

Yeah, after seeing the pic that thing got smashed hard alright. With that kind of force on a running motor I can almost guarantee a spun bearing on cyls 1 or 2 even though the VQ utilizes a pretty stout bottom end girdle...but that's a hard impact to the rotating assy.on top of crank end play being all fubared...id say keep looking buddy.

Shipping the car is under $1000 and im scared of trying to flat bed it cause of the GTR kit on it. Im sure the bumpers would get damaged. I say the motor is going to blow because it really sounds like a spun bearing with a bent valve(s). Along with blowing smoke , eating oil and 250k I would just replace it before going 3,500 miles west with it.

I did find a 06 Altima SE-R motor with 46k and a car fax report for $950. The good thing is that its 35 miles from me so I could just go pick it up. Hopefully I can have this thing put back together quickly. I have never replaced a motor in these nissans before so it may take sometime as I work slow

Any tips would be very nice lol

I really dont know the weight. I have 3 sets of rachets and sockets from 1/4 drives to 1/2 drives , Impact sockets , gear wrenches , electric impact gun , low profile jack , 32" breaker bar , pry bars and a few other goodies. I also have a single 12" speaker box with a custom wall so it looks real clean. It doesnt weight the rear down
