Default Block-Off Plate Questions

I gots a few questions:
1. Whats the purpose of the block off plate?
2. Does the +2 degree timing really makes a difference across the powerband of
the Maximas?

B.O.P. just covers up the opening in the manifold when you remove the VIAS assembly. The plate doesn't actually increase the performance, it's just the better air flow you get from taking out the VIAS butterfly assembly.

Word of mouth is the advanced timing will give you a noticeable power increase.

Default Re: Block-Off Plate Questions

1) I am against the BOP for the 6th gen and here is why ,

the whole BOP came because 4th gen maxima guys are dropping in the 3.5 motors,
they CANNOT fully use the VIAS to their advantage, BUT acutally my boi ran a VAFC to acutally control the VIAS and to open it up earlier than what the ECU wants to open it up.

Before I get you lost , the VIAS acts like a secondary butterfly plate, As you increase velocity air into the intake, the VIAS which divids the shelves inside the upper intake manifold to feed the runners.

Since the 4th gen guys couldnt really use this to full potential thus the wonderful thing called a Block off Plate which also lead to the SSIM

For us 5.5 and 6th gen guys, we can fully use the VIAS which is a good thing, Nissan didnt spend thousands and thousands of dollars to R&D something that didnt help in any way.

Case in point , when I made my own BOP and dyno my car, there was a dip between 3K-3500rpm, even tho I was making good power I had this dip there.

I re-dyno with my own VIAS mod, and Notice the dip was toally gone, Altho it didnt increase HP it help me lose that dip in the graph.

Why is it so important ? when you tune you want a clean graph.

Im sure now everyone is going to ask about what mod I acutally did ?

I drilled (3) 5/8 holes into the VIAS plate on top, (2) 5/8 Holes on the lower side,

What does this acutally do ? it acts like NOT having a VIAS but its still there,

With a BOP you will normally gain more mid-range and upper power, and lose some lower,

With the VIAS you still have lower range but not as much in the upper range.

I will sooner or later do a write up and some pictures of what I did a year ago, Ive pretty much kept quiet about the whole SSIM and BOP because its my opinion about it.

Sure the SSIM works great on boost, without it you lose low end but you gain top end,

the rule of thumb is always , " to gain something you need to sacarfice something "

as for the advance timming, if you do this at the dealer with the consult 2 , rememeber you need to run 90 and up octane , you do not want to run any lower octane or else it will start knocking

I lost a little low end power. But I felt a stronger pull in 3rd gear. I'm thinking about putting the VIAS assembly back in. I just miss that torque off the line especially when I have a car loaded with passengers.

OK, thanks for the responses fellas. I really don't wanna lose top end power so I'll prolly leave the VIAS alone. As for the +2 degree timing, we'll see down the road.
I was trying to see the most cost feasible way to squeeze a little bit more power outta the max without going forced induction, but since I've gotten lazy at turning my own wrenches, I'll leave it alone and squeeze power outta my Bimmer wagon...
Maximus, nuff thanx on the sig. Hope I got it right now, it appears that way.

Yea I think im gunna remove my block off plate and put back on the stock vias...

I lost enough low end by doing port & polish upper and lower intake manifolds [ssim] so ill just put the vias back on to get back as much low end as possible.

Hope I didn't open up a can of worms asking 'bout the block off plate. I realize sometimes we replace certain parts on our rides either in the name of power or looks. If a trade off is OK with some folks, cool. Don't wanna trade off anything, period....I guess the maxima has enough power for me as a DD.
@ Nizmo1- guess your sig lineup indicates horsepower addictiveness...I was once there a while back 'til a 150+ mph spinout on I-95 down in Miami gave a serious wake up call....... Still nice my brethren!!!

I am against the BOP as well, I had mine on and off twice. The car had a huge LAG when stepping on the gas with the BOP. Without the bop the car was MUCH more responsive.

To gain 1 HP for lag.... not worth it to me.
