Default Anybody Ever Heard Of A Water Pump Doing This? (Please Comment)

I think my waterpump is going bad, not seeing any leaks replaced the thermostat and ETC sensor already. Block tested at the radiator and thank God it didnt turn yellow. It was suggested to me that sometimes the fins on the pump will wear down or maybe even just hover on the pump. I had a mechanic over today and we agreed that the coolant in the radiator was not flowing, but the level would rise every time the thermostat opened. Im at 226,000 on the Max currently and refuse to get rid of it please help.

I've not heard of any waterpump issues on our cars, but I've heard of that fin issue on other vehicles. Depending on the cost of the pump, and the time involved in changing it (not sure on either), it may not be a bad idea given the mileage of the car.

Paging @BurntOrangeAppeal....

Has the coolant been maintained? If not then the coolant will become corrosive first then turn to gel later as the additives break down with age.

If it is the water pump, it is in with the timing chain. Might as well change the timing chain guides too while your in there. Due to the cramped space, arthritis, and fat fingers, i would leave this to a mechanic.

I have never changed the fluid prior to this situation First owner of the car, but the Dealers wife had put 6000 miles on it. I Had to have it because its an Elite. Since then ive went through numerous motor mounts, struts, a trans, timing chain and guides (they should have changed the freaking pump then) recently installed Eibachs and was about to install front and passenger side motor mount again until this happened. I have three payments left on this thing and now this. I have like three payments left on this thing and now this. WTF

Welcome home

220k and you have skipped all cooling system maintenance intervals

I would start with replacing your radiator and coolant before you go any further. Your radiator could be restricting flow.
Vq35de water pump impeller is metal meaning it will not spin around the metal shaft(I've never seen one separate from the shaft when they are metal impelled)
I've seen lots of plastic ones do that but I doubt its the case here.
Id change the radiator & fluid first as its needed given the circumstances you presented.

I hear you , im open to all options. I can say that the fluid seems not to be running though just rises every now and then the mechanic told me i should be able to see it running through the radiator. And if it was restricted from the radiator wouldnt the water pump just cause the fluid to just run out of the radiator not happening. Im an average 80 to 95 mph. I Can cruise around all day but as soon as i get heavy feet on the highway i get the problem and it s intermittent doesnt do it all the time or as bad all the time sometimes it does it after running hard and i get to lights. Somrtimes it does it when im on the highway running and when i slow down it cools down

If your cooling system looks as bad as the shaft end of the broken pump you posted, then for sure your radiator is blocked as I mentioned earlier.

Secondly, I would do a compression check. From what you are describing when you are under load it overheats and at idle it cools....it could be a head gasket problem, you are pressurising cooling system under load and on idle there is no load and it cools off.
Also I would pressurize the cooling system and look for pressure drop.

A competent technician should be able to run the necessary tests and figure this out.

Again, id start with changing the rad before you get deep into the motor. (this is based on the info you provided, not by me inspecting/diagnosing your vehicle in person)
Radiator will run you about 120-150 dollars.

well i havent pressure tested it, but i have block tested it. i waited for the steam to build up in the radiator and gapped the cap as i held tested the steam coming out of the radiator for exhaust fumes. The fluid remained blue it should have turned yellow if exhaust fumes were there.Even went as far as to connect the tester to the top of the radiator via the big rubber stopper and duck tape. The steam came through the tester but negative on exhaust fumes.

It sometimes does the opposite , sometimes it will over heat sitting still and cool off when acellerating
