![]() First, some background - 2004 6 speed with 74,xxx miles. Second, the problem - My issue only occurs during acceleration, between 2000 and 3000 RPMs. I don't really know how to describe the noise, sort of a whining/buzzing noise maybe. (I don't have the ticking noise on start up.) In the lower gears, 1st to 3rd, I usually go through this RPM range quickly, so the noise is brief. In the higher gears, 4th & 5th, the noise lasts longer because I'm in the RPM range longer. I don't hear the noise in 6th because I'm usually above 3000 RPMs. So is this the tensioners? |

James, hard to say without hearing it. You are in the mileage range for the tensioners though.

Im looking at getting a 04 maxima SL with 64k miles. Will it need new tensioners soon? What is the usual mileage range?

Well I have an 06 SL with 90k on it and I'm not having any issues. Hopefully the person that owned it before I did took care of it. People generally say it occurs between 60k - 100k, so it's a luck of the draw @big_c

When I was saying "taken care of" I mean I think they may have had the issue and had them replaced because I haven't had any issues at all.

James try to see if you can get a passenger and record the noise ,
im wondering if it maybe just your throw out bearing is whining , but without much of a sound clip its a bit hard to troubleshoot. |

I will try to get a sound clip of it. For now I'll try to describe it a little better - it sounds like a screeching/squeeling noise. Almost like a pig squeeling. No, there aren't any pigs under my hood! I checked that!
