Talking Alternator Belt / AC Issue

Hey good people. My Max died the other night because my alternator belt snapped when I slammed on the gas and the A/C was on (dont know if these are related but I thought I should just state it.) I had the joy of replacing my belt (7hour job) and now it runs again. The only problem left is that my AC doesnt work and if I try to run it or the window defroster it kills my battery. Any of ya'll have any ideas on what this could be. I dont mind going to a shop or doing it myself, I just dont want to pay for my ignorance. Too many scumbags in NYC. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure, haven't heard that one. Would an ECU reset take care of this? Maybe the system made the compressor & alternator fault when they tried to run with no belt. Anyone???

The bearings on the AC Compressor pulley could be shot, which is causing a drag on the belt system and killing your battery, or the belt is on too tight which is putting a strain. Was the AC killing your battery before.

No way a belt could snap when braking that hard, the belt could of been on too tight. Was this the OEM belt or an aftermarket.

The AC was definitely working and I am not sure if it was the OEM because it was just about destroyed. Looked like a dog had gotten to it. I recharged the AC the beg. of the summer and it has been ice cold working very well. Then when I accelerated the other night the battery and brake lights came on and the AC smelled like hot motor smell. The car died shortly afterwards and after I put the belt on my car runs now just the AC or defrost (didn't try heat) kills the battery. I don't believe I put it on too tight cuz it fits like a glove and I'm sure the part is right..

You said your brake and battery light was on, which means your alternator is dying. You need a new alternator.

My Brake and battery light WAS on and now that I replaced the destroyed belt it runs fine. Just trying to run the AC kills my battery.

That's really strange, I've never heard of that. I don't know where to start.

Get your Alternator tested first, from there we'll see whats the problem. And also check your AC, but if your AC Compressor was failing you would be burning belts left and right because it would cause a drag on the belt. So get them inspected at a local shop.

I concur with a bad alternator...although that doesn't explain the chewed belt. Did you replace both belts?

Only how a belt could be chewed if it was the wrong one, or it was on too tight.

But turning on the A/C doesnt kill your battery. The alternator does. So unless you have something else that is draining your battery or a short circuit somewhere that's the only thing I can think of.

As I said, I think he has an alternator issue. Although I also think there is something else going on here other than the alternator.
