Default 2006 Nissan Maxima Tranny problems?

Car BANGS! when shifting to drive, it also slips in first gear and when deceleration getting close to a complete stop it feels as if something is dropping from underneath the car. SES light on which reads P0731 Gear 1 incorrect ratio. Other then that everything else is fine, the wierd part that comes along is the problems go away so no more bang, and slipping etc, but then it will come back. Has anyone experience this issue? is it a valve body issue or tranny.
