Default 07 Whining Noise/Sound & High Idle RPM?

Just bought my friend's 2007 Nissan Maxima, has about 104,000 miles on it. He has documented oil changes every 3k miles, and documented maintenance from Nissan at 30k, 60k, and 90k miles.

Couple things I'm noticing:
1) The whine sound, even when hitting gas
2) Just noticed high RPMs at IDLE (just started the car)

I just don't think this is normal. Check out the video I just took.

My 2007 Maxima, starting up after being in a 25 degree (F) garage all night.

Is the whine sound normal (for CVT??)???

I hear NO clanking sounds (nothing like a chain clanking something). Just this whine. At start up, as you can see near the end of the video, note the idle rpm. Car has been started about 5 seconds before the video starts.

When I accelerate, I hear the sound. My buddy said it's done that for as long as he can remember and thought it was normal (the sound).

Now, what about the idle RPMs. ? I've had the car about 3 days but don't think it's been idling like this (JUST noticed it) and could be due to the cold?

CVT Issue? Or is there NO issue here? Thoughts? Any chance it's a transmission (CVT??) issue???

You need to do an IDLE Air Relearn. Probably why your idle is so high.

Hi Eddy,

Is that something I can do myself? If yes, is there a tutorial here?

Or take it to the shop? If take it to the shop, ballpark cost $?

This sound like the correct procedure?

Idle Air Volume Learning Procedure
1) Start engine and warm it up to normal operating temperature.
2) Turn ignition switch OFF and wait at least 10 seconds.
3) Confirm the accelerator pedal is fully released, turn ignition switch ON and wait 3 seconds.
4) Repeat the following procedure quickly 5 times within 5 seconds.
1) Fully depress the accelerator pedal.
2) Fully release the accelerator pedal.
5) Wait 7 seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for approx. 20 seconds until the MIL goes off.
6) Fully release the accelerator pedal within 3 seconds after the MIL goes off.
7) Start engine and let it idle.
8) Wait 20 seconds.
9) Rev up the engine two or three times and make sure that idle speed and ignition timing are within the specifications.

Oh, and Eddy, the sound, is that sound normal for these cars with CVT?

Well the idle is not normal.

Could be something else causing the issue. But I had that same issue and it was with the throttle body. Got it replaced and everything has been fine since then.

But not 100% sure on your issue. I would start with an idle air relearn. Where are you located? The procedure is a pain in the ass to do. So if you have a friend at a dealer... you can get it done using the Consult 2 to fix your high idle problem. Other than that everything else sounds normal.

On initial start up ur rpms will b high but should get down to 900 rpms or less once warmed up. The whining maybe a couple of things such as belts, pulley, alternator or worst case the timing chain. If ur rpms continue to b high after warmed up, u need a throttle body. Where's ur location?

Sitting in the started car (its COLD outside).... RPMs started at about 1700. About 60 seconds after, they're down to 1000, and dropping. Gonna try that procedure and report back.

I'm in Minnesota (St Paul suburb).

Default Re: 07 Whining Noise/Sound & High Idle RPM?

My car never gets that high, even when it's cold.

The RPM issue I had threw a code, P0507. Like Mr. Dolla said, wait until it warms up and see what it idles at. If still high, you do need the throttle service at the dealer, $340-ish, which includes the cleaning of your injectors, etc. That's what I had to get done for it to be fixed properly.

Oil changes have nothing to do with throttle body or intake manifold cleaning. With time, dirt and carbon gets built up and needed proper cleaning. Oil change only changes the oil in the Engine, it doesn't clean anything to do with air flow in the engine.

Good luck.

If I let it warm up more I bet it would keep going down... I'll keep monitoring.

Did I miss a response to the "whining" noise/sound question? :-) That kinda normal? (see my vid, engine sound).

That sounds like normal idle. Minnesota! DAMN!!! Check ur belts n c how tight they r. U should get maybe a 1/4" of play, it shouldnt b over tightened. Check the idle pulley aswell, should b no wiggling. GL.

Dont pay the dealer for a TB service. Thats crazy. Seafoam it, half bottle in the gas tank n pour the rest into a cup. Then remove the brake booster hose n put it into the cup n turn the car on. The vacuum produce by the engine will inhale the Seafoam n clean the TB.

the reason i asked, deadbolt, is because eddy on another thread (Timing Chain How Long Will It Last?) said that sound is normal because of the cold air intake. Was just curious if he or someone else still had that opinion after seeing my video (not taking into account the RPMs).

My 07 makes a whinning noise (sounds like supercharger whine). I was told from the dealer that it was the alternator, probably a bearing or something internal. My 2 cents!
