Default 04 SE 5spd AT - New Valve Body - New Hard Shift

Okay, so I've done a ton of research and did the install earlier this week. I let the rtv sit until today. Somehow I missed the part about potentially having to "relearn" the TCM. Read I didn't and read I did need to do that.

regardless, I started to get a hard 2-3 shift and quick 3-4 shift just as everyone else with this transmission issue does it seems. Anyway, got the new OEM valve body from courtesyparts and took on the install. Everything went smooth, made sure the washers were in, wires hooked up right and that they weren't pinched when the cover was put back on.

I got it down off the ramps tuesday and did a little reverse to drive back and forth in my driveway just to make sure everything was normal and no leaks, but I didn't drive it. Drove it the first time tonight and the 2-3 shift is normal, 3-4 shift isn't quick, BUT it seems I have a new issue. When decelerating, like you're turning without completely stopping, I get a big bang/jerk when completing the turn and just trying to accelerate.

Thought I was being proactive with getting on this fairly early with the car.

If I want to try to have the TCM relearn procedure, can I just disconnect the negative terminal and it will have to learn everything all over again? Maybe I didn't drive it enough this evening and it was still learning?

Anyone have any similar experience?

short update, I got it to do it once today, but did not try to intentionally do it except that one time. I have it up in the garage and inspected the trans mount, but can't notice anything obvious. The motor mounts are the same, look fine from the outside.

I'm going to put it back together and do the trans relearn and go for a drive.

From my experience, there is no need for a relearn. I suspect something went amiss during the installation. A friend of mine assisted me with the installation, which took less that 4 hours. I began using the car immediately after. Trying scanning it.

decided to take the trans mount out while I had it apart...what a pain in the A.

regardless. I'm not positive what it's supposed to look like on the trans side, but I'm getting ready to search. There's no visible tears...getting later here, so the dealer won't be open to go check it out from them.

I can get it to do it whenever I want and it only happens as described above. if I decelerate to a spot towards the bottom of 2nd gear and start to try to accelerate the rpm's can shoot to about 3k and then it slams into gear.

costee, scan it for codes?

Go to Autozone, they will check to see if your car is throwing codes. They do it for free.

Did you follow my instructions ?
I would check the wires again.

no codes at autozone, have it all the way apart again this morning, letting it cool off a little with the cover off.

I followed your instructions exactly. only a few things I could come up with that might be the issue. Both my washers stayed put the whole time, so I didn't remove them and put vasoline on. if putting the new vb in made one of them fall... Or I got an OEM VB with a problem. Might put the old VB in and see if the 1-2 problem goes away if I can't find anything. Wires look right, going to double check obviously.

I'm going to install the new VB again and if the issue is still there, I'm going to put the old VB back in and see what happens. The 1-2 that I experienced is way worse than the 2-3 shift on cold starts that I originally had, so I'll know its the new VB if the old one doesn't do it.

i got a dislike? cool, we're teenagers with facebook now....

I went through the install all the way again today checking and rechecking everything, still getting the new problem.

I am thinking one of the pressure control solenoids is messed up on the new valve body and that's my issue, but I won't know until i try to put the old valve body back in.

I don't know if it makes a difference, but did you make sure the parking rod was put in the right place? Maybe there's a problem with the VB.
Did you add 3.5 qts of matic k back?

yeah, checked the parking rod too.

I'll try to update this week sometime if I can get around to installing the old valve body and see if it repeats the new problem.

smitty, when I bought the car everything was fine. Then I got the cam position sensor code most people get. That was replaced under a 30 day warranty from the dealership. About a month passed and the car started having a hard 2-3 shift, and a quick shift to 4th gear after cold starts. Once it warmed up, everything is fine.

got a new OEM valve body last week and did the install with relative ease and upon driving it, all the up shifts were smoother, acceleration felt better, then when I was turning a corner to come back home it downshifted and it was almost like it couldn't find the gear, but when I tried to accelerate, it revved to about 3 grand and then found the gear, jerking it back into gear with the feeling of being rear ended...hard.

Yeah that sounds to me like like there is a big problem . I would take it to Nissan and see if they can do a TCM initialization . If they won't do it then I don't know what to tell you .

Hello. Ive done this repair many times only when customers in my shop does not want to replace the transmission. Then i initialize the tcm with the nissan consult II. Although this repair works most of the time i tell them that the symptoms they had before with hard shifts and banging into gear may come back. And most due come back. I always recommend replacing the complete transmission assembly. I only recommend only using a reman trans from nissa. Not a used one. I know this is expensive but i tell all the customers its the best way to go in the long run. Ive done many transmission replacements in the years of being with nissan. Got this trans job down to 5 hours. Let me know if you have questions
