Default 02-08 VQ Timing Cover Internals Parts Guide 101

Here is a break down inside the timing cover visual , so that everyone understands whats goes into replacing parts and where these parts are located.

This is how VQ35DE looks once the cover has been taking off

Click the image to open in full size.

This Circle is where your T stat goes , this comes with a gasket

This is the housing and the T-stat inside and how it looks

Click the image to open in full size.

Square Circle is where the Water pump is located,IIRC there (3) 10mm bolts that hold this and there is big O-ring that on the Water pump itself

This is the location of the Guide Rails , One Center TOP , one Lower LEFT

In the Circle this is your VTC cam sprockets , this is the Intake Cams/side

Click the image to open in full size.

In the Circle , these are your Exhaust cam sprockets which most of the time is supplied with a master rebuild kit

Click the image to open in full size.

In the Circle these are your Tensioner

Click the image to open in full size. on the Tensioner each one of them has a plastic guide that gets worn from rubbing on the timing chain , altho I wouldnt say its plastic its a type of nylon that Nissan use which I wont get into the excat name detail of the material, now in this picture you will see the side by side of what goes worn down , the RIGHT is worn , and the LEFT is new

Click the image to open in full size.

And you see here this is how the other two Tensioner looks after the cam sprockets are removed , there are a guide on them as well

In the Circle , this is your main crank sprocket (this is where your crank pulley bolts too,(and you can clearly see the OIL PUMP ) this is also where the CRANK ends on your timing side and reachs towards a Flywheel on your tranny side

This right here is your basic REBUILD KIT

Click the image to open in full size.

^^ thats excatly how it should look (well the two tensioner should be behind the cam sprockets )

Here is a better look in HD

Click the image to open in full size.

Here is the list of parts /specs :

(1) - Primary Timing Chain - (Lower - Roller Type)
(1) - Upper Timing Chain - Left Side
(1) - Upper Timing Chain - Right Side
(1) - Primary Tensioner - Lower
(1) - Tensioner - Upper Left (Secondary Left Side)
(1) - Tensioner - Upper Right (Secondary Right Side)
(1) - Guide Rail - Upper Top
(1) - Guide Rail - Center Left
(1) - Guide Rail - Lower Left
(1) - Guide Rail - Tensioning Rail
(2) - Camshaft Sprocket - Exhaust - 24 Teeth
(1) - Crankshaft Sprocket - 21 Teeth

That is all for today kids, tomorrow (or whenever I get a load of time to do a write-up /pictures with colorful circles ) we will learn how to re-build a VQ internally

Any mom and pop shop might charge you in the range from $700-900.
The dealer will run you $1.4K labor alone.

I agree on this. But some dealers even charge up to 2K just for labor.

Under 1K would be a good deal for a person/small shop in today's economy.

Okay makes sense, they are metal, unless the chain is hitting them weird I think they would be fine.

I'm going to have to do this soon, I just started hearing the ticking noise a few days ago, want to fix it before anything else goes wrong.

I'm compiling a list of the parts I will probably need. Replacing Timing Chain Tensioners

I plan on having as much replaced "while they're got it apart" as I can, maybe upgrading if there are any upgradable parts in there. I kind of doubt it. I already have a UDP.

Will do, I hope to post the prices in Brian's thread. At least I can pick them up locally, no shipping. If you trade it in, I get dibs on your bumper.
