Default A Day of DIY Mods: Front Lip, Nightshades, Shift Knob and Radar Detector

Spent around $50 today and made some minor changes to my 2008 SE Platinum Edition. Added a "Home Depot" front lip, nightshaded the tail lights, hard-wired my radar detector and added a shift knob. I like DIY mods that cost next to nothing... as long as they still look classy. What do you think?

I'm on the fence about the front lip. Needs a little adjusting still, but I think it came out pretty good. It took me about an hour.

I'm really happy with the tails. 2 coats of nightshades, 4 coats of clear and a lot of buffing. Stop/Reverse lights show through pretty well, but I'll most likely upgrade to LED bulbs. I also removed the MAXIMA and 3.5SE badges.

I also hard-wired my radar detector to the left of the rearview mirror and mounted the volume/mute button between the steering wheel and center console. Happy to have my lighter plug back for my iPhone dock. These pics aren't the best, but I'll take better ones tomorrow with daylight.

Finally, I bought a generic cheapo shift knob from Autozone. Black leather with orange stitching. Normally, I'm not one to buy from the "ricer isle" at Autozone, but I think this fits pretty well.

Tomorrow, she's getting a major detail. Rarely do I get consecutive days to pamper her so I'm taking full advantage of this perfect weather. Peace!

Good job came out nice. I curious about that lip, how does it stay attached. I am assuming it can withstand highway speeds?

Thanks for the comments! It's definitely coming together, but I've got a long way to go.

I used Meguiar's Ultimate Compound and buffed by hand. Wet sanded with 2000 grit, 2 coats of Nighshades, 4 coats clear, 4 hours to dry, wet sand again and then the Meguiar's took out any orange peel and gave them a real nice shine.

I'm contemplating taking off the Nissan badge as well... but also thought about painting all of the badges with gunmetal chrome color. Not sure yet, but I do like how clean it looks now.

I started with double sided tape to help hold it in place and then I used some 5/8" sheet metal screws with 3/4" washers about every 5 inches. It's definitely not going anywhere. Made some cuts to the back of the strip to make the bends/angles a little more precise.

Looks great!!! DiY is the way to go. I'm jealous of the radar detector. These devices are completely illegal in Canada. Not only you get a ticket for speeding by its also followed by a ticket for possession of a radar device

I wired it straight to the fuse box using add-a-fuse connector on the radio fuse slot. I just tucked the wire under the headliner and down the pillar. What's odd is I have a Bel Radar Detector, and when I ordered the smart-cable, I was sent one for an Escort. Works fine though... may even upgrade to an Escort, but I really want a V1. Too bad I can't DIY me a Valentine.

I'm interesting in more detailed pics if you get the camera out again. Do you have a product number or pic of the package?

Is there a full write up on this here? I'm going to start searching.

I'll take some more pics and do a write up on it... I don't think there is one on here. I do think it will look better on the 04-06, being that the front bumper has more of a curve to it. I may have some of the garage door seal left from Home Depot so I'll grab a part number off of it.

This is the one I used:

Shop Frost King 18' Garage Door Replacement Seal at Lowes.com

I screwed it on with self tapping screws. I like it. I think for less than 25.00 its a good mod.

Yep- that's the same thing I used, except the one I bought was 9ft. There is another type of seal that is "U" shaped- which obviously does not work, but the packaging is the same. (Just a heads up.)

Pretty easy to do- I'll post pics of the underside tomorrow for reference... like 07maximan said- self tapping screws, and you are good to go. It's surprisingly durable, too.

If you take your time, it can look like it came from the factory that way. Adds a bit of character for very little cash.
