Default Build/Refresh 2004 Maxima

Hey guys I guess this has been a long time coming and it's kind of a long story but I'll do my best to keep it short. Basically my Max was at a point where it had seen better days, I ended up letting the car sit after getting discouraged with the timing chain issue and the fact that after i changed all the coil packs I had one go bad instantly (rear bank of course). So i moved on to other projects, school, life and i picked up a foxbody mustang to toy with. Keep in mind i usually had three cars in my stable so the fact that the Max was sitting didnt really hurt me to much other than my pride lol.

After getting some motivation I started ordering parts to get the Max running again. I started with the coil packs and a timing chain kit with all the gaskets and seals. Initially i had planned on doing all the work my self but I ended up meeting a guy from a local performance shop who would do the job for what i considered cheap so I just went for it. While he started working on the car I just went crazy and started ordering all kinds of other parts, some it needed others just because I wanted to. I ordered a yellow top optima, starter, alternator, kyb strut mounts, kyb shocks all around, exedy clutch slave, gates upper and lower radiator hoses, exedy oem clutch, exedy clutch master, steel braided clutch line, mitshimoto radiator, manzo headers, NWP spacer kit with blockoff plate, all motor mounts and tranny mounts. I might be forgetting some things but you get the idea .

Anyway after i picked the car up and ran it for two days I pulled a couple of codes i'm assuming are related to the headers. so far the codes are P1284 and P0138. Basically thats were it sits as on now until i can figure out what to do about those codes. I'll try to post a couple pictures when i get a chance and i'll do my best to keep up with the build thread. Any help on those codes would be great

for the sake of the thread I figured i would add I bought the car used from the second owner with 50k and it now sits at about 150k and has been pretty reliable through the time I had owned it other than the timing chain issue. So it's a 2004 silver 6speed

Well it was my own fault but I got a ticket for an expired inspection sticker today. I knew I shouldn't have been driving it but I figured this morning I would chance it and drive it to work since I'm only a couple miles away. Basically now I have to go in and get a rejection sticker and keep working on getting these codes off. I tried a couple of easy things last night and reset the CEL so I wanted to put some miles on it but the codes still came back.

Little update, haven't been working on the car to much as of late but I'm still waiting on my new ANCEL scan tool (my other one quit so I've been using the one at Advanced) and I ordered two 90 degree o2 spacers. Once I get everything I'll start trying to sort out my codes

Lets see the car!! I let my car sit the same way as you, I didn't go to crazy because I had a lot of things to get. For the timing I did it myself, man the motor sounds so healthy. I just replaced my alternator as well but I have my eye on the mish radiator.

Hahaha I'll get to it soon, I know I have been slacking big time. Still working out the bugs from the recent mods and from sitting so long but the motor does sound great now that the timing chain have been taken care of. Knocking out a big project like that really makes you appreciate the car a lot more

Just recharged the AC this weekend because when the motor got pulled I lost the charge. It's a little cold but not where it should be, I might add another can and if that doesn't work I'll have a shop do it so they can pull a vacuum on it then charge it.

New scan tool came in and so did the 90 degree o2 spaces. Should be working on my codes shortly, the holiday kinda threw me off haha

So yesterday I went in for a rejection sticker to buy me some time so I could drive the max and sort out my codes. During the inspection they noticed a few things that were worn and need to be replaced. No a big deal just kind of a pain, it happens the car sat for a while and some of the parts were original.

Leaky shocks/ struts, already have some new kybs and tein springs waiting to go in (want to paint my springs tho because I'm not feeling the green lol)

Break pads were getting low so I bought some Wagner ceramic pads locally

Rear sway bar bushing and links were shot so I went ahead and bought some Moog replacement parts.

But the really killer was I had a oil leak. The oil looked like it was coming from the back valve cover gasket and ran down the back of the block and on to my belts and headers. I honestly didn't notice an oil leaking or a smell so it was a shock to find that out.

Anyway they refused to give me a rejection sticker due to safety reasons so I brought the car back home and started working on replacing the worn parts. I ended up spending an hr plus trying to get one sway bar link off, it was completely rusted on. I Ended up breaking out the cutting wheel and just cutting the bolts off lol.

I was only able to get the one side done before it got dark but I'll be working on it this weekend if the weather holds out. I also have an appointment with my mechanic to check out the leak. Should be taken care of for free because my guy just did the timing chain job and it must be something related to that.

I also was able to live stream some data with my new scan tool and found a couple of my o2S were out of spec which makes sense due to the headers. But I put one of my o2 Spacers in bank 1 sensor 2 and it seemed to put the readings back in line with the other one. Hopefully that will sort of at least that code but no way to tell until I start driving it again which should be this weekend.

**i took some pics of the whip just have to get them over to my computer and you guys will finally be able to see the dirty girl**

Figured I would try to keep you guys posted best I can.

Still plugging away, working on the car but I got cut short yesterday due to a storm that rolled in yesterday so I'm back at it this morning. I needed up having to replace the calipers all around because I felt they really weren't moving like they should have been. Not a big deal but I'm itching to drive the car again, if I had more time I would have opted for a BBK.

Today I'm planning on flushing the brake system with some new fluid, painting the springs and reattaching the rear sway bar. I swapped out the end links and was changing out the bushings when I realized the bushings I got were the wrong size which sucks. So I'm going to have to reuse the old ones until my new ones come in on the 14th. It turns out my car has the 25 mm sway bar not the more common 21. It's a stock bar as far as I can tell but no one locally stocks that size bushing.

If everything goes good I should have the car back together so I can get it to the shop on Monday to have my oil leak looked at

Ok guy couple quick things. First off I know I'm slacking on getting the pics up lol but I'll get to it. Wish there was a way to do it from my phone anyway...

Finally got the rear end moatly squared away. New pads, calipers with lines flushed, shocks, springs and new lower knuckle bushing installed. The only thing left to be down is the sway bar bushings for the rear then that half will be completely done. I picked up the bushings today along with new valve cover gaskets and PVC valve.

Me and my mechanic took a look and found the oil leak was coming from the rear bank just like I suspected originally. When we held the rpms around 3,000 you could see the oil start to spit out from gasket. So Monday after we get out of work he's going to meet me and we're going to replace and check the gaskets and install a new PVC valve.

Another thing I noticed today was my new Mistsu Radaitor was leaking but it's coming from the cap.... good thing I kept the original. I've heard those caps have had problems so keep an eye on it if your thinking about installing one.

Still not much luck with the codes, haven't been working on that to much but I did get a new bank 2 sensor 1 o2 and I'll install that later this week. I keep telling myself I will get this damn code off !!!!!

Good job bro, just keep knocking out stuff little by little and you will get there. When I started bringing mine from the dead I tried to bleed the brakes only to find out my master cylinder was bad. A few $$ later I got new lines all around, 1 new caliper from the parts store, and Duralast gold ceramic pads all around. I wish I had the $$ for the bank but I just as you had to spread the cash around as needed. If you want email me the pictures and I can load up the ones you want. Brandonwaltersmith@gmail.com

Thanks bro, I might take you up on that if I don't get to it this week. Things have been so crazy lately with work and I'm working on the Max and the mustang when I can.

I'm rocking the gold pads too. I haven't done the fronts yet but the rears feel nice. I'm supposed to fix the oil leak in my valve cover today and a new code came up the other day. It was a crank position sensor so I'll hopefully get that changed out today too. Lots of little things with this car it seems like every bolt is ether rusted or frozen and all these little sensors are failing, but I guess that's just part of it and it didn't help I let the car sit for so long

I hope it doesn't come back to bite me but I bought the store brand cam sensors for bank 1 and 2. They came with a lifetime warranty but we'll see how they hold up. If I didn't need them ASAP I would have ordered a better brand. The guy at autozone was cool, he gave me a 10% discount. I think he feels bad for me because I've been in there at least once a week since I brought the Max back from the dead haha
