Default How to Replace Your Timing Chain (VIDEOS)

While searching youtube i found this guy who is making videos on how to change out the dreaded timing chain tensioners. He is actually doing the whole timing chain job. The videos show why the dealer charges 14+ hours in labor alone and the parts can run upwards to 4-$500.00. I understand most will not want to take this project but for us driveway mechanics its a great tool in figuring out if we can handle the job or not.

I have spoken to the poster and he wants to help people out with these issues and agreed not to remove the videos. Currently he hasnt finished the job completely but has gotten very far into the project. Please subcribe to his channel for updates and i will post the new videos as i see them as well

Eddy
I ask that you or any other mod to update my thread as needed. This would be an awesome sticky once completed

Its not as bad as i thought it would be. It looks like alot of things will have to come off but not too bad of a job for people who have changed out there belts , alternator , pulleys or more. I have changed almost everything on this car so far. I was in debate of pulling the motor to install a lower mileage one but if i can get more life from my current motor for half the price why not. My ultimate plan is to install a 2010 motor in my 05 with a cvt tranny

Lot of stuff to take off but not too bad. I would definitely just pull the engine and do it.

It isn't that bad if you have patience and the time. Dealer simply is worth the cost sometimes. I would rather do it myself though.

My ideal time to do this would be adding front sway bar, headers and intake manifold spacers, changing spark plugs and I will just drop the motor and do it all. But this is absolutely helpful and much appreciated.

Most of the time it will be just your tensioners. But so many people ride with bad tensioners for so long that it affects the chain and other components which may need to be replaced.

Replacing the timing chain tensioners is not a difficult job and you can do it as mentioned in the video. Now changing the timing chain assembly itself is where things get very complicated. For that you need a lot of patience and guidance from the FSM (factory service manual). Most people pull the motor for the full replacement process as it makes things easier. Timing chain tensioners you can do with the motor in the car (just remove the cover).
