Default How to Install Grounding Kit

Courtesy of Active Tuning
--------
Installation Time: Approximately 30 minutes

Tools Required:

  • 10 mm socket
  • 12 mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Short Extension
  • Long Extension
Materials Provided:
  • 4 Ground Cables
  • 2 M6 Bolts
  • 1 M6 Nut
  • 2 6mm Flat Washers
Click the image to open in full size.
Overview
4 Ground cables are installed:
Click the image to open in full size.
Installation
First we will install the 15" supplemental battery-to-chassis. One end is installed onto the negative battery terminal with the nut provided as shown:
Click the image to open in full size.
The other end is mounted to the inner fender bolt hole left from removing the factory intake. Be sure to remove the paint for good contact at all painted connections first as shown. Silicone grease or something similar may be used to prevent corrosion:
Click the image to open in full size.
If your stock airbox is still in place, remove one of these bolts:
Click the image to open in full size.
Then install the cable with the M6 bolt provided in the hardware kit:
Click the image to open in full size.
Click the image to open in full size.
The 20" long cable is the supplemental transmission ground. Bolt one end under the 10mm bolt head visible directly under the MAF and holding a small bracket to the top of the manual transmission as shown (You may use the most easily accessible accessory bracket bolt on the top of the transmission and near the starter):
Click the image to open in full size.
On an auto trans remove the bolt holding the wire harness bracket to the transmission and install the 8mm cable end under that bolt:
Click the image to open in full size.
Click the image to open in full size.
Remove the plastic cover, and the 6mm end goes to the chassis on the drivers side strut tower as shown here:
Click the image to open in full size.
The 26" cable is an engine ground. Look for a small threaded hole at the bottom of the valve cover near the dipstick, and bolt one end here with the M6 bolt provided. Clearance is tight, so make sure that you tuck the terminal under the flange of the valve cover and up tight against the gasket before installing and tightening the bolt. After tightening bend the terminal slightly to clear the coolant tube and the dipstick tube:
Click the image to open in full size.
Click the image to open in full size.
The other end attaches with the 10mm bolt holding the front coolant reservoir bracket to the inner fender. First remove the bolt holding the coolant reservoir to its bracket:
Click the image to open in full size.
Then remove this one and lift up the reservoir and set it aside. The hose does not need to be disconnected:
Click the image to open in full size.
This gives additional clearance to remove the other bracket bolt from the inner fender, and to install the cable terminal. Reinstall reservoir after installing cable. The terminal can be bent slightly here for a better fit also:
Click the image to open in full size.
The last 12" cable is installed from the intake manifold to the passenger side strut tower. Remove the 10mm bolt at the inside rear corner of the top of the strut tower at the plastic cowl and install the 6mm terminal end of this cable here:
Click the image to open in full size.
Click the image to open in full size.
Remove the long 12mm bolt at the top of the plate on the passenger side of the intake manifold and install the 8mm end of the last cable here:
Insure that the cable is routed also as not to interfere with the intake valve mechanism which switches the intake manifold from the long runners to the short runners. It is not necessary to remove the engine cover to install this cable.
Click the image to open in full size.

That's it, you're done! You should notice a smoother running engine, faster starting, a better idle, a few additional HP and better mileage.

I have the racingline performance grounding kit. It's a bit different from the kit I see here. Anyone got the racingline one? And if so did you install it yourself? And was it difficult?

I don't believe ActiveTuning makes/sells them anymore...they are always showing backordered/out of stock.

Grounding Kits, Custom Grounding Kits & "Big 3" Upgrades! LED Conversions + Services!

Look at post #261 . For my kits, the "big 3 upgrade" completes the grounding kit by adding a positive wire for the + battery to +alternator post.
