Default How to Do 6spd Short Shifter Mod (By NiZMo1o1 @ Emerald Performance)

Source Credit: Alan aka NiZMo1o1 @ Emerald Performance

------

We'll guys I got a bit sit of shifting this new 6spd tranny with the shifter as high as it was.

So I figure i would order a Spec V B&M shifter.

Some of you may or may NOT know is that ive done the 6spd swap but I had to use parts from
2002 Maxima
Altima SE-R
Spec V tranny
2004 Maxima parts.

In lude of all that the shifter itself I belive is a 2002.

Well I figure the Spec V B&M would work for this and as I found it I didnt, the pivot ball is way bigger than the OEM one that I had on my car.
(Diislcammer do this at your own risk )

Here are some images to show what I went thru and you will need a welder.

First the comparssion

Not only is the shifter SHORTER is also a C shifter , which means the shorten of each gears is reduce
Click the image to open in full size.

now before you start taking things apart you will need to purchase this washer,
these are spring washer, once you pop the old one off you ususally cant re-use it.
to be on the safe side I purchase one ( well the shop gave me one ) You can re-use the one if your careful BUT I
wouldnt recommened it.

you must use a pick to pry the old one out , to reinstall it use a socket and even tap it with a rubber mallet.
I will get to that later

Click the image to open in full size.

Why is it important to get that clip off ? well you need to remove the spring washer to remove the shaft in order to pull the OEM shifter out of the
plastic plate to get the new one in.

Tools you will need ,

a Punch and a hammer , a bench with a Vice helps ALOT !!, as well as these

with the punch you will need to knock this clip out

Now you may remove the plastic peice and the shifter out

this is what holds the pivot ball this plastic peice

Well since Ive already gotten it out , imma a fabcrator.
So guess what ? Imma make it work..

The OEM shifter I had to use a hammer and bang the pivot ball out thru the threads shown here

Luckily the B&M shifter has allen keys that can relived the pivot ball from the shaft.
So here comes the tricky part, RE-USING the OEM BALL to the B&M ( Nahhh no tricky for me )

If you have one of these then your good
Click the image to open in full size.

So I had the OE pivot ball on the B&M and spot weld to make sure it stayed. then I weld all the way around and filled in the hole so its
a solid peice.

here is the outcome

Click the image to open in full size.
^^ not pretty but thats why we have a grinder ^^

Click the image to open in full size.
(GRINDING -sorry that neptune song is in my head now )

now that everything is in its place its time to place back the shifter into the plate.
now what you didnt see is there is a spring and YOU CANNOT GET THIS WRONG

You must place it back how it comes before you can tapped back those pins and spring washer
Click the image to open in full size.

You must line this up as well

Click the image to open in full size.

Ok done , Also forgot to note VERY important that you added some grease in the pivot ball when
you install the shifter back. this is very important, if you want to use astroglide be my guest , whatever floats your boat.!

Now heres a few shots of the interior, remember guys I had to make my own brackets to support this shifter since it was converted
I never seen the acutal 6spd 6th gen Maxima and how the brackets looks so we made our own.

Click the image to open in full size.
Click the image to open in full size.
Click the image to open in full size.

Imma shorty
Click the image to open in full size.

I had to trim down a little peice of this in order for the shifter to go into 6th gear.
Now im sure if you have a 6spd Maxima this isnt a issue.

For those thinking about doing a 6spd swap you wont have to go thru what I did * IF *
you purrchase everything from a 6TH GEN A34 PARTS.
Remember I Mix and match parts which is why everything didnt fit and had to be modded

Now it was time to put the interior peice back toghter..
WElLL GUESS WHAT ?

the AUTO shifter need to be also trim , 1 3 6 gear would not go into gear without me trimming the plastic peice.

So I went back to the drawing board and made my own shifter plate

Click the image to open in full size.
Click the image to open in full size.

So I trimmed the plate with a air saw just enough to clear the gears but it looked, well GHETTO

So being creative I wanted to do something one off that no one has.

so this is what I stated doing
Tang (smokedoutmaxi already pointed out that the hole isnt round )
Yes I made it to shape like a shield

Here are some pics of what I did that night working in the wee hours
Click the image to open in full size.
Click the image to open in full size.
Click the image to open in full size.

I purchase some chrome trimming that you use for your doors on the outside , bent it around so that it smooth the edges
that I cut into.

Then I tape it out and measure and decide to purchase CHROME hex nuts , so it had that style.
these CHROME hex nut cost me like 10 bucks a peice but again I was lucky I got them for cheaper.

Well before I show you the next thing I got bored on Chinese New Years (Sunday) and I woke up to do a new mod to my car,
I wanted to match my seats with my door skins and purchase 6 yards of the ostrich skin.
Here is a sneak peak of what I did which you will understand the last part of the shift boot.
Click the image to open in full size.

^^ i did my doors but that are some flaws in it because the weather was cold in Florida and the Spray glue didnt work as well ( THATS ANOTHER STORY )

anyways I had order a shift boot from a AUDI but when it got here it was SHORT and a differnt shade or orange.
im so Thankful that my AUNT works a sewing factory, I had extra material and she sew me a new shift boot the very next day

you can see the audi boot and the one my aunt made me

sooo

the finally result ?

YEAH BABY !! Ive also went with a z33 shift knob it has a better feel and also it matches my momo ebrake shift handle. Did this a few months back as I was waiting for engine parts to come in.

Betsy is getting there ! Also Ive reduce shifting so much that im loving it, I can get into any gear with the quickiness.

Is there a way to just shorten the oem shifter on the 6spds., sorta like cutting out a small piece (1" and a half, or so), then welding back the metal, replacing the boot-without compromising that springy thing when going in reverse???
Just a thought, want a shorter looking shifter, but don't wanna do any replacement shifter than the oem...inputs??

Default Re: How to Do 6spd Short Shifter Mod (By NiZMo1o1 @ Emerald Performance)

so you only want the height difference ? this is acutally a short C throw shifter , but if your looking for height , there isnt a way to cut it without not using the spring for the reverse, I dont acutally have that options anymore , its only a safey in case your driving and you switch to R instead of 6.

I have done this once before, and right away I knew that crunch ( dont need to brush if you dont have teeth )

its your call , if you cut it , re-weld it you will lose that safey feature for it to go in revese.

can you live with that ? that is the question.

again this shifter was never made for the A34 2004-2006 Maxima.

The 6spd shifter you need is from the Sentra Spec-V 6spd but you may run into issues only because my setup was bits and parts from a 5th gen maxima, sentra spec v and 6th gen parts

Yeah damn I probably wouldn't be able to do that, lol.
I remember when i looked on line that they only sold like the short throw linkage? and it was like a 150$

So theres no way i can buy a short throw shifter and put it in with out modding it or running in to many problems?

/edit btw eddy i love that shift boot color and the interior looks hott
