Default How to Change Your Engine Oil

Member Credit: jingiko

This is one of the easiest maintenance procedures that anyone can do.
I decided to make a DIY for those of you who are clueless as to how or where to begin on doing an oil change.

I drove around the neighborhood for about 5-10minutes to stir up any oil containments that may be lifted up to circulate in the oil.

Step1:
Click the image to open in full size.

First off you are going to need these supplies.
- 14mm socket & ratcheting wrench
- Pair of ramps or a hydraulic jack with two jack stands
- 4.5 Quarts of oil 5w30 ( or 10w30 for winter )
- Oil filter
- Oil catch pan ( which can hold at least 5quarts of oil which you must dispose of properly )
- Funnel
- Shop rags or towels
- Latex/Work gloves
- Oil filter wrench or a channel lock that can grasp your oil filter ( not pictured )

Step 2:

Click the image to open in full size.

Once you have all the supplies, your going to need to lift(drive) your car ON TO the ramps. First you'll have to align the ramps with the two front tires.

If you need assistance driving up the ramp you can ask your wife/gf/dog/neighbor.

NOTE: be careful not to drive over the entire ramp.

Step 3:
Click the image to open in full size.

Next you will have to place your oil catch pan under your vehicles oil pan which is located under the vehicle by the passenger front wheel.

Step 4:
Click the image to open in full size.

Next you will have to pop open your hood and unscrew your oil filler cap (which is located on your engine cover), and you can set the oil cap aside.

Remember: Righty tighty lefty loosey

Step 5:

NOTE: Engine oil will be hot so use extreme caution when draining your oil so you don't burn your skin.

Click the image to open in full size.
NOTE: Engine oil will be hot so use extreme caution when draining your oil so you don't burn your skin.

Here you will have to grab your 14mm socket and wrench to unscrew your oil drain bolt which is on your oil pan (located under your vehicle). Your only going to use the 14mm socket and wrench to loosen the bolt.

Click the image to open in full size.
After you have broken the bolt free you can then use your fingers to quickly spin the bolt off the oil pan onto the oil catch pan.

Click the image to open in full size.
You should then notice the oil which will shoot in the direction toward the rear of your car, so you should have your oil catch pan ready to catch the oil.

Step 6:

Click the image to open in full size.
After most of the oil has been drained you can then proceed to remove your oil filter which is directly behind your passenger front wheel (there will be a plastic splash shield located in your wheel well)

In order to remove your oil filter you must turn the filter toward the rear of your vehicle, and you may need the help with a channel lock/oil wrench.

Step 7:
Click the image to open in full size.
Once the old oil filter is removed you will have to prepare your new filter before reinstalling. You will have to lubricate the rubber ring on the oil filter by dipping your finger into the new oil and rubbing it around your rubber ring.

Then you can proceed to screwing on your new oil filter which should only be HAND TIGHT.

Step 8:
Click the image to open in full size.
Next you will have to grab a rag and clean your drain oil drain bolt which should be located on your oil catch pan.
Then you can proceed to re-screw your bolt, then you must tighten the bolt which also should only be HAND TIGHT.
You can also use that same rag to clean up any oil that may be on your car by the filter & drain area.

Step 9:

Click the image to open in full size.
You are now ready to pour in 4.5quarts of oil into your engine.
Be careful not to spill any oil.

Then re-screw your oil filler cap on and start your engine.
Let your engine run for about 10minutes.

While your waiting for your engine to re-pressurize this is a perfect chance to check under your car for any leaks that may occur.
No leaks?

Then you can turn off your engine and let it cool for about 2-5minutes.
After you have waited you can then check your oil fluid level VIA the dipstick!

(dipstick is yellow and is located on the bottom portion of your engine cover)

You can then pull out the dipstick and clean off the entire stick.
Re-dip and check the end of the stick which should have HOT and COLD. Your oil should be somewhere between those lines.

Step10:
Close your hood and reverse off the ramp.

Make sure to dispose of your oil correctly at a local AutoZone/Pepboys/Napa/or local auto shop.

For the bolt, 22-29 ft*lbs of torque is a bit more than hand tight.
